Examples of BAM and ISO/IEC test charts according to ISO/IEC TR 19797
"Device output of 16-step colour scales, output linearization method (LM) and specification of the reproduction properties"

Output linearization requires at least 128 colour measurements for printer or monitor systems. The device system of a printer or monitor includes all software and hardware as a "black box" between the input of the digital ISO/IEC-test chart and the output of the analog ISO/IEC-test chart, e. g. on a printer as hardcopy or on a monitor as softcopy .

Any ISO/IEC-test chart of the following tables in the format PostScript (NP.PS file) or Portable Document (NP.PDF file) includes no colour managment software and no profiles. (The PDF files on the web server are produced with the software Adobe Acrobat Distiller 3.0). The user may directly download a NP.PS file in PostScript to the PostScript printer. For the test the user usually transfers the NP.PS file in a NP.PDF file with his software version of Adobe Acrobat DIstiller and outputs this file with his Acrobat Reader on the monitor or printer.

The MTL code (= Measurment, Transfer und Linearization) is used for the output linearisation of ISO/IEC-test charts on printers and monitors.

The NP file without MTL code (N=No) in the file and in the format PDF (=P) is used for the start output.
The FP file with the MTL code in the file (F) and in the format PDF (=P) is used for the linearized output.

For Output Linearization the files of the following folders must be used:
The CIELAB data of the NP file output which are in the folders DE95, EE95 and FE95 must be measured for printers (and for monitors only if the reflection of the ambient light on the monitor surface can be measured).

Usually only direct measurment on the image screen is possible without the ambient light reflections. For monitors in this case the CIEXYZ data of the NP file output must be measured which are in the folders DE82 to DE85, EE82 to EE85, and FE82 to FE85 for four different luminance reflectances of the ambient light. In this case the luminance reflectance of the ambient light is Yr = 0,0, 2,5, 5,0, and 7,5 which corresponds to the CIE lightness L*n = 0, 18, 27 or 33 of black N. The contrast ratio Yw:Yn is then 288:1, 36:1, 18:1, and 13,5:1 according to ISO 9241-306.

If the measurement data of the NP file (start output) are included in the corresponding FP file with any editor (the appropriate normalisation of the CIEXYZ data is done bz the FP file) then the FP file output on printers and monitors show the 16ßstep output which is approximately equally spaced in CIELAB for the seven output series between White W and the six chromatic colours CMYOLV and Black N.

If the output device system produces different outputs for the two ISO/IEC-test charts with the device coordinates cmyn* and olv* then 256 colours must be measured.
