Colour, Colour Vision, and Elementary Colours in Colour Image Technology
For this page in German see farbe
1. Colour and Colour Vision
is a publication by K. Richter (2012), and is available as offset print in English and German. This publication is a description of the Karl-Miescher exhibition Colour and Colour Vision
at the department Lighting Technology of the Berlin University of Technology.
Since 2015 there is a possibility for free download of PDF files for:
- six languages English (E), German (G), French (F), Spanish (S), Italian (I), and Norwegian (N)
- three linearized outputs for a monitor (S), the offset print (L), and a laser printer (P).
All 18 versions of the six languages and the three output produce about 90 pages. The first 75 text pages with about 130 colour figures have the format A5, and the about 15 test chart pages have the format A4 landscape. The PDF file size is 2 MB.
For the display (monitor) output the file uses RGB data. In some special figures both RGB and CMYK data are used.
For the (mobile) display output only the versions (S) are appropriate.
see ES15.PDF in English,
or GS15.PDF in German,
or SS15.PDF in Spanish,
or FS15.PDF in French,
or IS16.PDF in Italian,
or NS15.PDF in Norwegian.
Three versions are also available on the ISO Standards Maintenance Portal in the
languages English, German, and French, see
http://standards.iso.org/iso/9241/306/ed-2/ES15.PDF in English or,
http://standards.iso.org/iso/9241/306/ed-2/GS15.PDF in German or,
http://standards.iso.org/iso/9241/306/ed-2/FS15.PDF in French.
For example for the display-output test, the ISO-test chart AE49 with 1080 colours
has been developed for this paper and printed in offset. The output questions for the 15 contrast steps are given
in English (E), German (G), and French (F).
The ISO-test charts are on the ISO Standards Maintenance Portal
in the file formats PDF, and PostScript (PS, TXT), see
http://standards.iso.org/iso/9241/306/ed-2/index.html.
For the offset and printer output the files include CMYK data. They produce an output with the undercolour removal property. All achromatic colours are printed only by the black colorant. In some special figures both RGB and CMYK data are used.
For the offset output only the versions (L) are appropriate. In this case the colour workflow shall not change the CMYK data.
see EL15.PDF in English,
or GL15.PDF in German,
or SL15.PDF in Spanish,
or FL15.PDF in French,
or IL16.PDF in Italian,
or NL15.PDF in Norwegian.
For the printer output only the versions (P) are appropriate. In this case the colour workflow shall not change the CMYK data.
For example for all PostScript laser printers there is a CMYK input channel. One can copy (or download) the file to the printer which interprets the PostScript code in the PDF file without any change by the workflow. In other cases an option "Colour Management OFF" will not change the data by the colour workflow.
see EP15.PDF in English,
or GP15.PDF in German,
or SP15.PDF in Spanish,
or FP15.PDF in French,
or IP16.PDF in Italian,
or NP15.PDF in Norwegian.
Remark: One may test if the standard offset print and many laser printers with CMYK input produce approximately a linearized device or elementary colour output on many papers with the appropriate test charts on pages 76 to 90.
2. Older versions of Colour and Colour vision from 2013 and 2012
For older book versions of 2013 see the following files which are intended for five different languages, and for three output devices. The format of all pages is A4 landscape and the PDF file size is about 2 MB.
For the display output only the versions (S) are appropriate.
see ES_13.PDF in English,
or GS_13.PDF in German,
or SS_13.PDF in Spanish,
or FS_13.PDF in French,
or IS_13.PDF in Italian.
For the offset output only the versions (L) are appropriate
see EL_13.PDF in English,
or GL_13.PDF in German,
or SL_13.PDF in Spanish,
or FL_13.PDF in French,
or IL_13.PDF in Italian.
For the the printer output only the versions (P) are appropriate.
see EP_13.PDF in English,
or GP_13.PDF in German,
or SP_13.PDF in Spanish,
or FP_13.PDF in French,
or IP_13.PDF in Italian.
For older book versions of 2012 see the following files which produce an english output:
For monitor output with rgb data (mr), see (44 pages, 2 MB)
color12mr.pdf
For offset output with cmyk data (oc), see (44 pages, 2 MB)
color12oc.pdf
For printer output with cmyk data (pc), see (44 pages, 2 MB)

3. Colour education, colour figures, and order of the book Colour and Colour Vision
For colour figures for colour education out of three books of K. Richter, and ISO/IEC-, CIE- UND DIN-standard documents, see
ME.HTM
Members of standard organisations and teachers in the area of colour can order a free printed version, see
colorO
This printed book gives a much better impression of colour and its applications compared to the internet versions.
4. Improvement of the present translations and new translations
If you help in your mother language for the translation of the English or German original book, I will
send you a free book Colour and Colour Vision or Farbe und Farbsehen.
Your possible help is described separately, see
colorT
5. Display output for eight viewing conditions at work places
Some ISO-test charts have been developed for monitor or data projector output, for example for
the viewing condition dark room (contrast step CY8=288:1),
or the standard viewing condition in offices (standard contrast step CY5=36:1),
and for eight viewing conditions between the viewing contrast steps CY8=288:1 and CY1=2:1.

The frame area of the test charts shows with appropriate software active links to other colour test charts of ISO/IEC, CIE and DIN standards and standard documents.
