With EPS-files the best reproduction in colour and resolution is reached. One can use on the Windows-platform "copy" and on the Macintosh-platform "download" to print the EPS-file by a PostScript-printer.The EPS-file can be viewed directly on a colour monitor by a display-Postscript system (e. g. Nextstep, Openstep on Windows, Yap on Macintosh OS X server).
One can use the PDF-file to view the digital ISO/IEC-test charts on any monitor and to print on any colour or black and white printer (not only PS-printers) by Adobe Acrobat Reader (or Exchange) Version 4.0, 3.0 or 2.1.
Output optimization of the achromatic ISO/IEC-test chart no. 3
If the start printer output of the ISO/IEC-test chart fails to pass some of the ISO/IEC-tests according to ISO/IEC 15775, e. g. to recognize the 16 grey steps or all the Landolt -rings, then there is the intention for an optimized printer output. The following Table 2 shows examples for the specification of the reproduction properties of the start output and the optimized output according to the method given in Annex G of DIN 33866-1:2000-08 and ISO/IEC 15775:1999-12.

In Table 2 four different printers using the PostScript operator: 0 0 0 n* setcmykcolor (series www.ps.bam.de/DE09/9120n/n9120EFP.PDF, n=A,F,O,T) are shown. The files with the extention NP.PDF (N=no colour management) and FP.PDF (F=File colour management) distinguish only by a few lines at the beginning, which includes the colour management data (which optimizes the colour output). The file FP.PDF includes the measured the CIE lightness data L* of the start output by the file NP.PDF.
Important exercise in four steps which is recommended for a user who likes to
optimize visually the output of his device which may be a
printer, monitor or a Video-beamer:
1. The PS file T9120EFP.PS is
copied to T9120ECP.PS (instead of F=File the abreviation
C=Changed is used)
2. The PS file T9120ECP.PS includes in line 81 and 82 the
measured lightness data L* of the 16 grey steps of the
output of the file T9120ENP.PS.
The 16 measurement data are as follows:

It is recommended to change the
16 data to the 16 default relative values in equidistant steps
with a step difference of 6.67:

This gives the final PS file T9120ECP.PS (we have changed additionally the name FP.PS
to CP.PS in the file)
3. Produce an output of the three PS files NP.PS, FP.PS and CP.PS on a PS printer or Display PostScript system (or use e. g. Adobe Acrobat Distiller and produce und use PDF files for output)
4. The output comparison of the three
PS files (or three PDF-files) shows that visually the 16 grey
steps and Landolt-rings in T9120ENP.PS
and T9120ECP.PS are identical.
The file T9120EFP.PS gives a lighter output (the start output
was too dark). The output comparison of the three PDF files T9120ENP.PDF, T9120ECP.PDF
and T9120EFP.PDF shows the same properties.
Result: Only the change of two lines with the relative CIELAB lightness data L* from equidistant relative values to measuered values allow to optimize the output of the achromatic ISO/IEC-test chart.
Recommended application for a user
device (e. g. a printer, a monitor
or a Video-beamer):
1. If the output seems too light for light colours then
guess and change mainly the lighter values, e. g.
guess and use 90 and 72 instead of the default values 80 and 60.

This is realized in the files T9120ECPN.PS and T9120ECPN.PDF
which produce a darker (N) output for light colours
only. The dark colours remain unchanged.
2.If the output seems too dark
for dark colours then guess and change mainly the darker
values, e. g. guess and use 10 and 28 instead of the default
values 20 and 40.

This is realized in the files T9120ECPW.PS and T9120ECPW.PDF
which produce a lighter (W) output for dark colours
only. The light colours remain unchanged.
An optimized output often depends on more acurate input data. They are produced by colour measurement of the grey steps in the start output or by visual comparison with the grey steps of a reference, e. g. the DIN-test chart no. 1 according to DIN 33866-1 or the ISO/IEC-test chart no. 1 according to ISO/IEC 15775.
Remark 1: Output optimization for images
with 32 ISO/IEC-test colours is under development (result expected
in April 2001)
Remark 2: Output optimization for chromatic ISO/IEC-test charts
no. 2 and no. 4 is under development (result expected in May 2001)
Remark 3: The 16 above lightness data may be stored in the Distiller
Startup (S) directory. A PS file can be produced by nearly
any application. If a user produces from this PS file a PDF file
then the Distiller may take the lightness data from the Distiller
Startup (S) directory to produce the intended correction.
Remark 4: If the 16 above lightness data are stored in the PostScript
Device (D) memory, then the output of all PS files of any
application may produce the intended correction.
