1. Other related
test charts for the test of yield, emission and reproduction properties
by different forms
There are similar proposed ISO/IEC-test charts for different
tests and for Colour Workflow (CW) by different input and
output PS operators
without and with MFL and MTL code for Output Linearisation
(OL). Each file produces 10 pages of 2 series times 5 pages and
2 or 3 forms.
The MFL code (Measurement,
Lightness Function and Linearisation) includes the CIELAB lightness
L* data of the start output. The Output Linearisation is produced
by one simple function. The result is a linearisation of the CIELAB
lightness L* of the grey scale.
The MTL code (Measurement, Transfer and Linearisation)
includes three dimensional CIELAB data of the start output. The
Output Linearisation is done by a Transfer (T) of the corresponding
device coordinates (000n*, w*, nnn0*, www*) to CIELAB coordinates
LAB*. The output transfer changes from LAB* to coordinates of
one of the output PS operators no. 0 to 3. The result is a linearisation
of the CIELAB lightness L* of the grey scale

2. Purpose of
the Yield test without and with Output Linearisation
With the ISO/IEC-test
charts of form 1 to 3 the yield of achromatic printers
is specified. The counted printed pages of the yield test depends
on:
1. The file format (PS, PDF or equivalent)
2. The PDF Reader version of PDF Readers (e. g. , Adobe , GoScript
or Mac OS X)
3. The colour space (CMYN, GREY, OLV) and PS operator (setcmykcolor,
setgray and setrgbcolor) used for the definition of achromatic
colours. There are at least four possibilities without (NP
files) and for with (FP files) Output Linearisation
CMYN (CMYK) and 000n* setcmykcolor
GREY and w* setgray
CMYN (CMYK) and cmy0* setcmykcolor
OLV (RGB) and rgb* setrgbcolor
Remark: The scaling of the output (e. g. of the grey figure
in the test page) for the four possibilities is usually different,
see the test page DE81/10L/L81E00NP.PDF
which uses for different PS operators (setcmykcolor, setgray
and setrgbcolor) on one page.
4. Use of the option "device
raster" or "PDF raster" of the PDF reader which
is present for many printers
5. Use of different resolutions for the output
6. Use of different printing modes, such as "fine print",
"photograde", etc.
7. Interpretation and transformation of the colour space data
(GREY, RGB, etc. ) in the PDF file by the PDF reader or the workflow
8. The output of correponding greys of the PS test page DE81/10L/L81E00NP.PS
is different if e. g. the default settings of Adobe Photoshop
are used and any of the three options (GREY, RGB, CMYK) for input.
Remark: One can use the NP and/or FP files and Adobe Photoshop
includes the MFL or MTL code of the FP files in the output.
The yield may be determined without or with Output Linearisation (OL), see ISO/IEC/WD 19797:2003. The corresponding NP and FP files are in the following Tables 1 and 2. Without Output Linearisation the yield value may be very different depending on the above parameters. Many of the above parameters are specific and change according to the version of the computer operating system and e. g. the version of the printer drivers.
It is therefore recommended to use the method of Output Linearisation (OL) for the determination of yield. For this one CIELAB lightness L* measurement is recommended for the 16 gray steps which are equally spaced in the digital file between 0 and 1. Then the determination of yield is independend of the above seven parameters. But any choise including the transfer from the FP.PS file to a FP.PDF file (e. g. with Adobe Acrobat Distiller) must be constant during the whole test procedure.
For Output Linearisation the output of a 16 step grey scale must be measured only once. It is recommended to measure the output of the 16 step grey scale at the end of 1/10 of the declared yield of the manufacturer, e. g. to measure page 248 of the FP file in step S5F01. After printing of 1/10 of the declared yield most of the printers seem to be stable in output until fade. The 16 CIELAB L* lightness data, test date, testing person and the number of 1/10 of the manufacturer yield (e. g. pcount2g=100 instead of 250) must be included arround line 60 of the file Y84EXXFP.PS. Then after the transfer of the PS file to a PDF file the output of the FP.PDF file produces with the same parameters a 5 step grey series in form 1 and a 16 step grey series in form 3 both equally spaced in CIELAB and independend of the above seven parameters.
Remark: Output Linearisation reduce large L* output differences of intended equal L* spacing and real output L* spacing often by a factor 5 to less than 3 in L*, see ISO/IEC/WD 19797:2003. The additional work to include Output Linearisation was less then 10% of the whole time to be spend for the yield test according to practical experience.
3. Version and changes
20030501: Version 2.0 for the test of the yield for monochromatic
electrophotographic printers.
There is a test method without (N=NP file) and with (F=FP file)
Output Linearisation(OL). For the NP and FP files see Table 1
and 2.
4. Test aim and short description of the test procedure without Output Linearisation (N=NP files)
Steps S1 to S2: Start output and example outputs of form 1 and 2 with output of one page only.
Step S3 produces the ouptut of the series no. 1 and 2 of 5 pages each, in any case one page of form 1 and 4 pages of form 2 (ratio 1:4).
Step S4i (i=01 to 10) produces the ouptut of the series no. 1 and 10 of 250 pages each, in any case one page of form 1 and 249 pages of form 2 (ratio 1:249).
The number 250 is assumed here as 1/10 of the declared OEM yield of the form 2.
5. Test files without Output Linearisation (NP files)

52 / 52 / 20 kByte |
Step S2: Start output form 2, one page |
Serves for the start output of the ISO/IEC-test chart, form 2 for the specification and the test of the output size for the yield page without text (continues form, series and page number) |
52 / 52 / 8 kByte |
Step S3: Short example
output 2 times (form 1 + 4 times form 2), produces 10 pages all together |
Serves for a short example output of the ISO/IEC-test chart, form 1 + 4 times form 2 for the specification of the yield (continues form, series and page number) without Output Linearisation ("NP file") |
52 / 52 / 88 kByte |
Step S4: Test output "yield" 10 times (form 1 + 249 times form 2) produces 2.500 pages all together |
Serves for the output of the ISO/IEC-test chart, form 1 + 249 times form 2 for the specification of the yield (continues form, series and page number) without Output Linearisation ("NP file") |
52 / 52 / 11.800 kByte |
The yield is specified as the amount of the printed pages. For a step by step test the files in the format PS, PDF or equivalent of the steps S1 and S2 may be used. For an automatic test the files in the format PS, PDF or equivalent of the step S4 may be used.
The file of the step S4 produces 2500 pages which are splitted in ten series of 250 pages each. The output may be interrupted, e. g. by the software Adobe Reader at any page. After replacement of a cartridge or input of new pages the output may be continued after this page. A continues form, series and page number is printed on every page.
Date and test person (example "2003-04-01; K. Richter) and test device (example "unknown B(E/G)80") may be replaced arround line 60 in the PS file and appear then on the output of the page frame. The series and page numbers (scount=1 to 10 and pcount=1 to 250) may be also changed. In both cases the PS file must be transferred to a PDF file, e. g. with the software Adobe Acrobat Distiller. Any printer can print this PDF file.
Note: It is recommended to print step by step the pages 1 to 250, 251 to 500, ..., 2000 to 2250, 2251 to 2500 of the steps S401, S402, ..., S409, S410 with the file Y81GXXNP.PDF (about 12 MByte! which is produced from Y81GXXNP.PS by the software Adobe Acrobat Distiller Version 3.0).
